Integrating essential oils into your next massage is a holistic way to elevate, not only the physical sensations but, also the emotional and mental aspects of relaxation. As a licensed massage therapist committed to personalized and effective therapeutic treatments, I’d like to share simple ways essential oils (EOs) can enhance your next massage session.
Essential Oils: A Gateway to Natural Healing
Essential oils are natural and concentrated extracts from the seeds, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of the plants. The healing properties of essential oils (EOs) were discovered by French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse when he accidentally healed a badly burned hand with pure Lavender oil.
“Researchers have identified more than 3,000 molecules in essential oils that produce significant effects encompassing every body system.”
Massage and Bodywork magazine, March 2024
Essential oils possess remarkable therapeutic properties that have been harnessed for centuries across various cultures. Each oil carries a distinct aroma and a unique composition of compounds, offering a diverse array of benefits for both the body and mind. When skillfully incorporated into massage therapy, these oils amplify the therapeutic effects, promoting a profound sense of balance and rejuvenation.
Understanding Aromatherapy
Aroma is processed by the olfactory nerve which takes a direct route to the hippocampus and amygdala, part of the limbic system in the temporal region of the brain. These areas deal with memory and emotion.
An aromatherapy massage is a natural treatment method that uses aromatic EOs to induce relaxation, reduce anxiety, soothe tense and painful muscles, or aid in sleep conditions. Essential oils can be massaged into the skin using a carrier oil or inhaled through a diffuser. I like to further enhance the therapeutic effects by choosing a synergistic massage oil customized to the client’s wellness goals.
Other ways I incorporate EOs into a massage is through cold and heat therapy. I use a hot towel compress with peppermint oil to soothe tired and achy feet. I might use rosemary or juniper oil for sciatica or sports injuries. A cold compress with lavender or mandarin oil would help alleviate tension headaches or the onset of a migraine.
It’s important to notify your massage therapist about any skin sensitivities, allergies, or medical conditions before booking this treatment.
